Before you book anyone

The three questions behind most tree jobs

Tree work often gets put off, for three key reasons. Uncertainty on whether or not the work needs doing, if the work is allowed to be done, and the price that might be involved. These are our honest answers for each

Does it actually need doing?

Not always! A tree that casts shade or drops leaves on next door's lawn often needs only a crown thin or lift, not a complete felling. A tree with dead limbs, fungus at the base or ash dieback over a path or lane is different, this work is best done as soon as possible. We'll tell you which one you've got, even if the answer is to leave it alone.

Am I allowed to touch it?

Most of Sparsholt has been a conservation area since 1990, so a tree with a trunk over 75mm across is going to need six weeks notice with the council. Trees with a Tree Preservation Order need consent.

Will the price be fair?

If a rate is open-ended and hourly, you're going to have a frustrating experience. This is because the final bill depends on how long the work takes, which can vary a lot. At STS, we quote a fixed price for the whole job from top to bottom, covering the work, the waste, the stump and the clean-up, you'll know the final price before anything gets moving.

Local knowledge

Tree work that suits Sparsholt

Sparsholt sits about two miles north-west of Winchester, high on open chalk downland with a clay cap over much of the village. That mix shapes the trees here. Deep-rooted natives such as beech, oak, yew and hawthorn do well, and many gardens have mature specimens that shade the houses and shelter wildlife.

The village design statement asks residents to keep native tree cover, protect the banks and hedges along the lanes, and replace lost trees with similar species. We work with that in mind, whether it's lifting a crown over Woodman Lane or reducing a garden beech that has outgrown its space.

Clearance work over the sunken lanes is a good example. Woodman Lane and Home Lane run between high banks with overhanging trees, so a crown lift that keeps the tunnel effect usually beats cutting back hard to the bank.

  • Conservation areaMost of the village, designated by Winchester City Council in 1990.
  • Ancient woodland nearbyCrab Wood and West Wood lie to the south-west of the village.
  • Sunken lanesWoodman Lane and Home Lane have high banks and overhanging trees that form tunnels in places.
  • Native hedgingHawthorn, beech, holly and yew are the species the village recommends for new boundaries.
  • Hamlets we coverWestley, Dean and Ham Green, as well as Sparsholt itself.
What the council actually decides

Winchester's tree officers say yes far more often than no

A big concern people have is that asking the council will lead nowhere. We took a look at every tree decision that happened in Winchester City Council's published 2026 decision lists to see the reality.

60 of 71tree applications and notices permitted or met no objection
30 of 30decided conservation area notices met no objection
21 of 23requests to fell a tree went through
Only 2refusals in total

Sparsholt, February 2026

Consent to reduce an ash by 2–3m in height and spread, because of decay and a bracket fungus. A clear reason, described precisely, went through.

Sparsholt, July and August 2026

A protected yew lifted to give 1.5m clearance over a garage, and a second yew reduced under a conservation area notice. Both went through.

What we do

Tree surgery services

Every job starts with a good look at the tree, the access and any permissions it needs. These are the services we carry out 90% of the time.

Tree felling

Whole-tree removal, it's either felled in one piece where there's room or taken down in sections with ropes when buildings, fences or neighbours are close by.

Crown reduction

Reducing the height and spread of a crown to bring a tree back in proportion, let in light or ease the load on weak limbs. All while keeping its natural & beautiful shape.

Pruning, thinning & lifting

Crown thinning to let light through, crown lifting to clear lanes, drives and lawns, and removing deadwood or crossing branches.

Stump grinding

Grinding stumps below ground level so you can replant, turf or build over the spot. Chippings can be left as mulch or taken away.

Hedge trimming & reduction

Regular trims for beech, hawthorn, yew and laurel, and heavier reductions for hedges that have got away from you. Done outside the main nesting period wherever possible.

How we quote

Ask for a whole-job quote

A whole-job quote is one fixed price that covers everything needed to finish the work. Two quotes that look far apart are often pricing different jobs, because one includes the waste and the stump and the other doesn't.

Whoever you use, ask that the quote spells out:

  • The exact work, in metres where it's a reduction ("reduce the crown by 2m", not "trim it back").
  • What happens to the branches, logs and stump.
  • Whether council notice or consent is needed, and who will submit it.
  • Public liability insurance and the crew's NPTC or Lantra chainsaw tickets, in writing.
  • That the work follows BS 3998:2010, the British Standard for tree work.
  • A fixed total, not an hourly rate that keeps running if the job overruns.

Be wary of anyone who knocks on the door offering to "take that tree down today". Cutting a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence, and the person who authorised the work can be liable as well as the one holding the saw.
